wife ann did find some time to go to church this morning. governor romney has gained in the polls since that first debate. how will he try to build on that success? peter alexander has been covering the romney campaign, joins me live now from washington, d.c. pete, governor romney got to be a bit more confident going into this second debate. the format is a bit different though. a town hall formal. how is he preparing differently? >> it's a good question. we were traveling into boston from ohio with the campaign yesterday. this is about as loose and as confident as we have seen mitt romney throughout the entire cou course of this campaign. there's a sense the crowds are appreciating what he's saying, having witnessed what he did in that first debate with president obama. he faces unique challenges in this next debate on tuesday night outside of new york city at hofstra university. specifically, he will have to speak directly to the voters in the room with them, just a total of 80 voters. while he's done a lot of town halls, the campaign says he has practice at this, he hasn't had

eye here is about the gender cap. according to the poll, romney's wiped off the board any lead, brought it to a dead heat. do you think this is real? and i have to talk about my deceased irish catholic grandmother, because she used to say about pollsters, if they have the nerve to ask, you have the nerve to lie. but could they really have wiped away the gap that they had? >> you know, unclear. i mean, here's the thing. i've always contended that for romney, it wasn't just about having one good debate performance. he's got to show some consistency. he's had a few good days. i think the jobs numbers and the big bird gaffe, if you will, have given team obama a bit of an opportunity to, you know, to rebound and push back, but we'll see. i mean, these polls are a snapshot in time. they certainly suggest that romney, as we all said, had a great debate performance. people took a second look and said, all right, let me pay attention, let me see what i think about this guy. the question is, now that they're taking that second look, when they go to his website and say, wait a second, wha

romney is leading in ten of the battleground states in politico's poll. trailing in the washington post political poll. what's your thought? does the governor think he can become the first republican to win without taking ohio? >> we're going to take ohio. the ground game that we put together there is exceedingly doing very, very well in terms of the number of contacts both on the phone and door to door. as you noted, he's been there quite a number of times. i think we continue to make up grounds. some of the polls have it tied. so i think in the final weeks we'll continue to make this about a clear choice in the election and governor romney will take ohio. >> take us into the back room for a second. without ohio you need to run the board here. what are your internals showing on that? how do you get florida and virginia? those are looking good? >> florida and virginia are looking good. nevada is looking great. colorado is looking great. iowa and new hampshire is looking very good as well. so i think, a, as i mentioned, i think we're going to take ohio. b, i think when this election

lead over mitt romney. that poll includes responses given before and after the debate. take a look at this. gallup's job approval poll taken entirely after the debate. 48% say they approve of the job the president's doing while 46% disapprove. before the debate, gallup had the president's approval rating at 54%. 42% disapproval. more on these stories throughout the next hour. president obama and his campaign might have broken a fundraising record last month, but he's still in fundraising mode, as i mentioned a few moments ago. president obama will land in los angeles where he will be attending a star-studded concert this afternoon followed by a $25,000 a plate dinner tonight. he'll end the evening at a private event with former president bill clinton and a dozen of his top donors. it's the latest in a series of trips to tinsel town to raise money. joining me now is our nbc white house correspondent. we've been talking about it all weekend. president obama's record setting fundraising total for last month. $181 million raised in just one month. campaign clearly not hurting for money

. the latest nbc news marist poll shows mitt romney with 48% of the vote. president obama 47%. that's likely voters in the commonwealth. that's a shift from last week hen the president had 48% and governor romney had 46%. those numbers are both well within the poll's margin of error. so we wanted to find out who is really ahead in virginia. i'm joined by brian moran, chairman of the democratic party of virginia. also cory stewart, the chairman of the prince william board of county supervisors, also a republican candidate for lieutenant governor there. let's start off, gentlemen, with listening to some sound from undecided voters in virginia. this is after the vice presidential debate on thursday. take a listen. >> i think the -- what was it, 23 million people are unemployed. i think that that's a big statistic, especially for young grads, especially young college grads. >> both have packages to create jobs. however, the jobs that are going to be created by president obama and vice president joe biden are going to be ones that are immediate jobs. >> all right, cory, let's start there.

poll is showing mitt romney is trailing the president in ohio by just four points as we point out, though, the only way to pennsylvania avenue is through ohio. at this point are conservatives willing to let mitt romney say whatever he needs to say? if he gets caught in lies so what as long as he wins. >> it is not the only way to the pennsylvania avenue but probably the best way for a conservative. look, i think there's bad news can good news coming out of the comments he gave to politico. bad news is that as -- social conservative who believes in the worth and value of all human life, we want him to come into that presidency and push some agenda that would protect the innocence -- innocent human life. however, the good news here is that, you know here, did say he would reinstate the mexico city policy which would keep federal funding from going to fund abortions. that's something we do like. but there's also a difference you have to note from a candidate. mitt is doing something smart here. he's saying, look, i know what i believe but here's the things i'm going to be able to do

how important this is for him. i think ohio is an interesting place to watch for romney and ryan. they're on the defensivdefensiv. they're listening to what they had to say. they've gotten their attention and you're seeing it in the polls. the polls have really tighten add lot. the last debate, the first debate with romney and obama really upended the opportunities for us in ohio. so you're seeing that. they're on the offense and it's interesti interesting. you u saw the obama campaign announce that clinton and springsteen are going to be campaigning for them in ohio. to me that seems they have to pull out the big guns now to not seat any ground. >> i mean governor romney, this is his fourth day in a row in ohio. i think both campaigns have been pretty clear how important the buckeye state is. i'll ask is there a path to 270 for you guys without ohio? >> look. i don't think they've written ohio out or excuse me off. it's still their path to 270. that's why they're there. because there's excitement on the ground there. you're seeing vol -- >> can you win the presidency without ohi

polls that booem initially had 18, 22-point gap with mitt romney. mitt romney had that deficit. looks like mitt romney has done himself some good in that debate to close that gap. i think you will see the first ladies out there and it is better for the first lady to talk about the "sesame street" line and big bird than the president. you saw that ad out yesterday that many people called absurd. you saw raerp romney have that editorial today and basically saying big bird versus a small president. i think they will step back from having a president talk about big bird and have the first lady do it instead. >> okay. hogan, let's jump ahead to tomorrow night. appreciate sewer truly on for vice president joe biden to deliver the debate in kentucky, same quote. team baerm needs a strong performance from biden to make up for last week and change the subject. another bad outing by a member of the ticket and democratic hand wringing could turn into full-fledged panic. is the shoe on the other foot now with president obama being the underdog, team romney, was panicking? certainly before
